Melbourne Celebrant Diary #1

A Stand-up Celebrant & the Jewish Transition

Melanie & James @ Zonzo Estate - Jan 2 2020

One question kept echoing in my mind while driving home from Melanie and James’ tremendous wedding - is it too late to become Jewish?

As I switched off the ignition, leant back in my chair and reflected on the night’s activities, I concluded that no – it isn’t.

I’ll learn some scripture. I’ll buy a dreidel. I’ll even get the chop.

I’ll do anything if it means going to another Jewish tinged ceremony. It was that much fun.

From the outset nothing was going to stop James, Melanie and their well-groomed entourage from having the greatest of times.

Not even the onslaught of flies which appeared like a religious plague were enough to dampen their spirits.

The ceremony was tops, peaking with James’ sublime set shot for goal and reaching a higher plain with Mrs. Maziel’s delicious brown schnitzels.

Mel and James met at Deakin, earning their respective degrees with a staggering six and half contact hours a week.

Through a mixture of five-star food, five-star banter and zero-star pots of Toohey’s New at the Hawthorn, they become a brilliant pairing.

Oh man, do you remember Toohey’s New? Barely consumable. It was one of the few instances where the taste rather than the alcohol content would make you throw up.

Once the ceremony wrapped up, I was on MC duty. I don’t MC as much these days, usually because I need to get back home to prep for another wedding the following day.

But for tonight I stayed on. And boy, I’m glad I did.

DJ Mercury barely let rip the first tune and punters were already scuffing up the dance floor.

It’s around the fourth time I’ve worked with him – a real class guy. Ditto Stone & Co - I love seeing their smiling faces. Also - Bianca Virtue - one of the best snappers in Melb.

Oh and also – must mention – I also took a snap of the lupini that were served. They are small Italian beans.

I used to throw these little bastards back twenty at a time as a fat kid from the suburbs.

Full kudos to all the speakers, too. Handsome Steve brought the sweetness. Craig – and special guest Helen – conjured the class. Steve and Ilana were gosh darn naturals out there.

And Karni… oh sweet, innocent Karni. As Mel’s sis, she copped it from everyone for being a hellraiser kid.

But her speech was on point. So too was her spirit and attitude. Great hair, too.

So, a ripping night. After some consultation with my Dad I’ve decided to stick with being Italian. Mostly for the food and the swear words.

But I’m still going ahead with the circumcision.

You only live once, right?

Shalom!
