There’s good people. There’s great people. Then there’s Sarah Alexander.

I’ve known Sarah since we were friends at good ol’ ACU Uni, waaay before I became a Celebrant.

She hosted a radio show and I would often swing by as a special guest host to lay down some of the hottest tracks: ‘Latin Girls’ by The Black Eyed Peas. ‘Where Is The Love?’ by the Black Eyed Peas. ‘Smells Like Funk’ by the Black Eyed Peas.

After I was fired as special guest host, Sarah and I became closer. She’s a special person who wears a smile well.

We did a Bachelor of Arts, and I had no idea what I wanted to do (does anyone in Arts?). The only thing I knew was that Sarah Alexander was always a person I would look upon fondly.

I reconnected with her and her now-husband Leigh in a dimly lit bar along the cobblestoned streets of Melbourne.

Leigh is – like his now-wife – an absolute belter. A pure delight. We have much in common. We think Cold Chisel runs far deeper than its VB swilling, singlet-wearing audience suggests. We also played the role of ruckman in our footy teams; a spot normally reserved for the tallest person in the team.

I’m not the tallest, but boy did I have a gorgeous leap. Still do. They used to call me ‘Disco’ (I’m assuming for my then wild hair and not for any ecstasy consumption).

Their ceremony went down at Rupert on Rupert, and it had all the trimmings of a Sarah/Leigh Melbourne wedding; chilled, subtle with only their nearest and dearest in attendance.

Plus, there was Talking Heads. Wow. I totally missed Talking Heads in my Gold 104 days. What a cracking band.

I was a little nervous before the ceremony. Even a wee bit emotional. I don’t get anxious before weddings, but this had a bit more of a nostalgic wallop. I mean, Sarah’s a long-term mate, one of the best. And Leigh is an outstanding human. I just wanted it to go as well as it possibly could.

And it did. We went through their story of meeting at a bar - while trying to hook up both of their mates up – to living in Canada for many years to some prose dedicated to their son / pup, Archie.

It was top-notch fun. And if one single image could describe these two, it would be this backdrop.

How cool.

And for good measure….
